  My son graduated last Friday

  i have talked about him before on this forum.

  he is now a graduate from mit!.

  it was a lovely weekend.. i got to meet some of the friends he has made in the past four years, and some of their families.. they were very nice, decent, friendly, and enjoyable people.

  It was a lovely weekend.

  I got to meet some of the friends he has made in the past four years, and some of their families.

  They were very nice, decent, friendly, and enjoyable people. Spent an evening at a parents house for an outdoor meal and the weather and surroundings were great.

  One chapter of my son's life ends, and a new one begins (well, sort of. He is going for his Masters now, so he is still in school). But, I feel certain that he will continue to grow, to seek out companions that are a positive influence in his life, and he is an adult that I am glad and proud to know!

  JW Parents in bad shape with no retirement.

  my wife's parents are in very bad shape.

  they are both 2nd gen jws.

  my father in law worked for a large american manufacturing company in the 60s and early 70s.

  "A few grand" sounds like less than 5k. One medical emergency later, that money is wiped out, and it didn't even pay for the aspirin at the hospital.
  
  Many of us, even with decent paying jobs, will never be able to really retire. Not even on Social Security, since the a$$holes in Congress want to get there hands on that and hand it over to their cronies on Wall Street. But, for those that worked as minimally as possible, people like my Mother In Law, who never worked, never contributed to SSI, whose monthly maintenance is solely dependent on the fact that her husband (not a Witness) gets a pretty big check based on his past earnings. If he goes first, she is going to get a very harsh reality. But, quoting her,"I don't need money, I have Jehovah!" (Who, while he loves taking money in, never seems to dish any of it back out to his faithful "sheep".)

  I just watched the final video from this years convention. OMG!!!

  i am shaking all over right now.

  i think it's worse that the bunker video.. i used to think there was no way that these people would actually "drink the cool aid" if you get my drift, but seeing this video i am now not sure it could never happen.. having a wife who i love dearly trapped in this cult is really freaking me out right now...

  I think it's meant to be metaphorical, in the same way that many of the illustrations are.
  However, dubbies, like Drax the Destroyer, do not "get" metaphors. So many of them will see this video and translate it into their fevered minds as God's Literal Truth.

  For all you "Downton Abbey" fans out there, the mother in this movie is played by the same actress that played "O'Brien", the maid to Lady Crawley. She looks much different here!

  it’s quite affirming to see the horrific material that they’re serving up at the convention this year.

  aside from blatant homophobia, the scenes at the end of the convention that are discussed on another thread stoop to new levels of fear mongering.

  it seems to occur to nobody inside the organisation that this kind of material could trigger fear, deprsssion, anxiety, stress.

  I know a very PIMI that flatly states that "homophopia" is a totally made up word. So, I guess the actual term would be (bad Greek here) homomiseo, or hatred of homosexuality. Anyway you slice it, gays are not welcome in the city limits of Paradise...

  well, i got to see the final day of this years regional convention.and i saw something that disturbs me.. the final, "summing up review" video.

  it disturbs me because it was so well done.

  (i wish i could remember the title of the song), to the strains of a solo vocalist singing in a fine "irish tenor", we see the actors from the previous videos of the last few days all assembling together in a clearing.

  A video snippet about two brothers from Malawi WAS played in the final talk, dramatizing two incidents with a black and a white brother.
  For some idiotic reason, they risked their lives on some "theocratic duty", and the white brother almost gets killed by black soldiers at a ferry crossing, but the black brother, who was told he was free to go, pleads for his companions life, offering his life instead. So, they are let go to travel on.
  Later on, they are driving through another town, and a crowd gathers around them, and they demand to see the black brother's political identity card (and DON'T get me started on THAT subject!). The white brother, using his quick wits, does the ...obvious thing, and drives on, leaving a crowd on foot to shake their fists (Well, DUH!). Not as dramatic as willfully standing in front of a rifle, I guess.

  You are absolutely right.
  This video divides right down the line, the "good people" (JWs) , and the "bad people" (evil men with assault weapons).
  But in reality, that "Great Day of Jehovah" will also include the wholesale massacre of totally inoffensive people, men, women, children, babies, who never really had ill will toward these strange, sad ones called JW's, or never thought much about them, if at all. Or looked at their literature, and said "nope, too hateful/strange/convoluted/inaccurate for ME to believe in." Or, never heard about them at all.
  This video presents dubs as persecuted victims (the whole assembly has this theme), but in reality, they are really believers in a ghoulish revenge fantasy.
